2014 Oscar Rundown

jennifer-lawrence-22

With the Oscars trailing not far behind the Winter Olympics, it seems that the ladies of the evening donned shades of our nation’s beloved red, white, and blue!  Hollywood’s “It” Girl Jennifer Lawrence (pictured, top right) sported her favorite hue in Dior Haute Couture.  Three of our favorites chose to wear different hues of blue.  Sandra Bullock (pictured, top right) seemed to be everyone’s top choice of the evening in her stunning sapphire Alexander McQueen gown.  With her sweetheart neckline, draped waist, and side swept curls, Bullock rocked old Hollywood glam with a touch of modern (notice the blue nails) and positively glowed in her custom Lorraine Schwartz jewels.  Ever the classy lady, Lupita Nyong’o (pictured, below) was show-stopping in her pale blue Prada gown, that deserved an award all its own.  Nyong’o has been hitting the red carpet in anything but pastels this awards season, but Sunday night she was a modern-day princess.  lupita-nyong'o-3The double-plunging neckline on the front and back was beautifully balanced with that full, gathered skirt.  From her head to her hands, she was adorned in multiple yellow gold and diamond Fred Leighton pieces ranging all the way back to the 1800s.  Amy Adams (pictured, below left) kept it all about the dress when she chose that deliciously dark royal blue Gucci Premiere number.  Adams swept her beautiful curls up into an interesting take on the French twist and pulled it off seamlessly.  She chose to keep the jewelry as delicate as her sheath with color coordinated Tiffany & Co. earrings and minimalist rings.  Kate Hudson (pictured, below right) looked fabulous in glamorous white, a matured and improved version of her other stunning look by Atelier Versace in 2003.  Other popular looks of the evening were nude or pale pink gowns with either metallic accents or an asymmetrical design.  Both Jessica Biel and Penelope Amy-Adams-9Cruz failed to pull off these trends.  With Biel’s enviable body, her dress choice should have been more detail-oriented.  Her Chanel Haute Couture nude and metallic number ended up looking cheap and like a last-minute decision, which is very hard to do in Chanel.  Cruz chose to wear a pastel petal pink Giambattista Valli dress which looked more like she was chaperoning a prom in the suburbs, rather than attending the Oscars.  Being a one shouldered frock, adorning a tiny black bow around the waist, and excess material at the other arm, this dress looked unfinished and like it didn’t know what it wanted to be.  But our final favorite was stunning couple Matthew McConaughey and wife Camila Alves (pictured, bottom).  America’s favorite Texan wore a winter white Dolce & Gabbana tuxedo, while his lovely wife, Camila, wore a pale pink Gabriela Cadena half-caped gown, which was the best one-shouldered look we’ve ever seen!  And just like the Olympics, McConaughey took home gold!matthew-mcconaughey-5-camila-alves-1

2014 SAG Rundown

julie-bowen-32014 marks the 20th anniversary of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards, where the union votes on one another’s performances.  While the hosts weren’t out favorite funny girls like the Golden Globes, it’s still a pretty fun show.  Let’s talk about the dresses!  One of our favorites happened to be widely disliked by critics, but we still adored the way Julie Bowen looked in her graphic Carolina Herrera gown (pictured, top left).  The orange and brown hues were reminiscent of the 1970s, but it looked spectacular when Bowen walked the carpet – like an optical illusion.  Definitely a fashion-forward choice.  Speaking of a Golden Globe host, Tina Fey donned a black column Oscar de la Renta gown with sheer mermaid panels.  An unusually sexy choice for the funny lady, and we liked!  Her outfit was made by her cute sidekick though – Lupita-Nyong’o-2breaking-bad-purseher daughter, Alice, who is basically her mini-me, was incredibly cute in a black floral dress with a white accordion skirt.  She stole the show though with her funny faces.  New Red Carpet darling Lupita Nyong’o looked stunning in vivid teal Gucci (pictured, above left).  The beautiful color looked gorgeous against her skin, and the pop of blue eye-shadow was very visually stimulating.  Lady Mary from TV’s Downton Abbey, better known as Michelle Dockery certainly looked sexy by showing off that porcelain skin of hers in a black and white J. Mendel dress.  Her bright red lipstick certainly made a cool contrast to the monochrome of the gown.  New Girl star Hannah Simone (pictured, bottom right) looked sophisticated in a very pale lavender gown by Marchesa (do they ever disappoint?)  But the night’s coolest accessory went to Anna Gunn who showed love for her career-making show, Breaking Bad (pictured, above right) by carrying a clutch with the show’s periodic element logo on it.  There must have been some luck to it – the cast michelle-dockery-10won for Best Ensemble in a drama.  Most of the other gowns were shades of blue or metallic – nothing too exciting or terrible to report on…  Next!

2014 Golden Globe Rundown

tina-fey-5-amy-poehler-3The 2014 Golden Globes began the real kickoff for winter award shows, and our favorite funny ladies, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler (pictured, top), killed it – with humor and glamor.  This above photo was our favorite look the two best friends donned last night: Tina wore a red bustled Carolina Herrera gown (although it photographed pink here), while Amy, who not only picked up her first award for playing Leslie Knope on one of our favorite shows, Parks & Recreation, but she also looked better than she ever has in a Stella McCartney black column gown with subtle white edging, and diamond earrings.  And it seems the hostess wasn’t the only one donning black and white!  Zosia Mamet, Jenna Dewan, Laura Carmichael, Hayden Panettiere, Jennifer Lawrence, Zoe Saldana, Allison Williams, Heidi Klum, and Julia Roberts all sported the classic contrasting combo, as well.  Roberts’ Dolce & Gabbana gown was a Lupita-Nyong'o-1julia-roberts-28little unusual (pictured, above right) but we thought it was sophisticated.  It probably would have looked better on a more mature actress, but we still liked it.  It seems if you weren’t wearing the popular color combo, actresses were either wearing black, white or red – the two biggest trends at last year’s Golden Globe and SAG Awards.  Even though many attendees wore similar hues, we did like a lot of the gowns at the Globes, but no one did the color red like newcomer and first time nominee Lupita Nyong’o (pictured, above left), who looked absolutely lovely in a caped, scarlet Ralph Lauren gown.  It reminded us of Gwyneth Paltrow’s Tom Ford gown at the 2012 Oscars.  She made wearing red on the red carpet look easy, when it most definitely is not!  Another newcomer, Margot Robbie (pictured, below left) turned everyone’s heads in a jewel-encrusted white Gucci gown, and emerald Christian Louboutin “Volpi 150” heels, which theSkinnyStiletto featured as a 2012 “Wednesday’s Shoe,” during “Irish Week!”  The hostesses with the “mostess,” Tina & Amy, stayed with the same designers all night, and wore the exact same hues last year when they hosted the 2013 Golden Globes, but this year, the funny girls switched colors (pictured, below right).  Both sported form-fitting gowns: Fey wore a burgundy Carolina Herrera silk, beaded V-neck, and Poehler chose a deep teal gown by McCartney, which featured lace margot-robbie-1tina-fey-6-amy-poehler-4panels down the side.  Poehler’s political competition, Julia Louis-Dreyfus (pictured, bottom right), looked fabulous in a bright red Narciso Rodriguez halter gown (it’s unbelievable that she turned 53 today)!  Our final favorite was Kate Beckinsale in Zuhair Murad.  While we’re not big on mermaid gowns or metallic, the beautiful Brit pulled off both while donning this sexy silver creation, Chopard jewels, and showing off that creamy complexion of hers.  It’s hard to believe she’s 40!  (Remember girls, sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen!)  The only two dresses our editors really didn’t like were Julie Bowen’s odd red/purple velvet creation, and Olivia Wilde’s skintight green gown by Gucci.  The always gorgeous Bowen looked like she was wearing a little girl’s Christmas dress from 1994, while we were stunned by how many fashion editors liked Wilde’s hideous dress.  She looked like the pregnant alien Sofia Vergara dressed up as for Halloween on Modern Family.  You want answers on how to flatter the pregnant form?  Justkate-beckinsale-5 ask Kate Middleton and Kerry Washington.Julia-Louis-Dreyfus-2 Onto the SAG Awards!
