The last time we featured Meg Ryan also happened to be a New Year’s Eve post – guess America’s sweetheart gets kissed a lot! In the 1989 romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally, Ryan plays an uptight New Yorker whose best friend happens to be a man (played by Billy Crystal), and the two spend years together without realizing they’re absolutely perfect for each other. The movie laid the groundwork for a lot other rom-coms, and while Meg Ryan’s clothing is preppy and pristine throughout the whole film (outfitted by costume designer Gloria Gresham), the dresses she sports are actually pretty dated. Doesn’t mean she’s any less cute in them! Here, Harry & Sally spend New Year’s Eve together, which foreshadows the importance of the holiday for them later in the movie… Our editors had trouble finding a photo of the final New Year’s scene, but we did find these cute pics from Mirror80, which did an adorable feature on Sally’s earlier NYE dress and how to update the off-the shoulder, ruffled look! Later, these two realize they’re right for each other on Dec. 31st, which is probably why this holiday is so over hyped – everyone’s waiting for a declaration of love that doesn’t come lol! Have a very Happy New Year’s anyway! <3
Carey Mulligan plays Jenny Mellor in the 2009 drama, An Education, about a schoolgirl who grows up too fast in a London suburb during the 1960s. Here, Jenny wears her school uniform in a couple of different scenes throughout the movie, sporting a gray A-line skirt, a cranberry-colored belt, a white-button down blouse, a matching diagonally striped tie, with both a gray pullover, and a crested school coat with a coordinated scarf. The color combo of gray and burgundy is always one of our favorite classic pairings for fall. Jenny dons some other adorable vintage looks in the film, like floral, gold, leopard, and even a watercolor frock that we just adore. But Mulligan apparently didn’t love her outfits as much as we did… She told Today, “I had to work my way into liking the costumes… I was less keen on the school uniforms.” Kate Scheyer, of Vanity Fair, pointed out that the film’s designer, Odile Dicks-Mireaux, created an arc of costumes to tell Jenny’s story of a teen that matures quickly by hanging out with an older crowd, beginning with the rain-soaked schoolgirl (pictured, bottom right) that her suitor meets on the street… Basically a classic pedophile pickup, but it’s also a true story!
Olivia Wilde is one of our favorite ladies to look for at red carpet events because she never overdoes it! (Which is why we were kind of shocked to realize this was the first time we were ever featuring her!) Wilde is known to show up in big, beautiful gowns with simple, elegant hairstyles, her signature smoky eyes, and fabulous shoes hiding under her trains! One of our all-time favorite gowns she wore was to the Emmy Awards in 2008 when she graced us with this dreamlike, pearl grey creation from Reem Acra’s Spring collection of the same year. The crystal-encrusted sleeves, intricately woven bodice, and perfected pleats were complemented by Wilde’s ability to keep the rest of the look subtle. She wore sparkling drop earrings, a giant cocktail ring, and carried a tiny, understated, silver clutch. Her loosely swept, curly updo and go-to makeup palette were expertly done to perfection making her the fashionista to fawn over!
We’ve mentioned that The Family Stone was one of theSkinnyStiletto‘s favorite holiday films earlier this week, and we’re continuing to discuss the cast’s outfits we just love! Fashion icon Sarah Jessica Parker plays an uptight Manhattanite named Meredith who does not fit in with her boyfriend, Everett’s family when she meets them for the first time over Christmas. Meredith arrives to the Stones’ home in this tailored gray suit, black pointy stiletto pumps, a beautiful black trench coat and a bun so tight and slicked back, it’s practically within Marine Corps hair regulations. She’s a successful businesswoman, and while her manners and image are picture perfect, her confidence isn’t as nearly put-together. (Although, we’re completely on her side when Everett’s niece breaks the heel on her ballerina pink pumps. Umm, hello? I met you 15 minutes ago and you’re stomping around in a pair of my shoes that probably cost more than your whole wardrobe? Don’t care if you’re 8, that’s so inappropriate!) Meredith and Everett (pictured, below) look great together in their professional New York outfits, but their souls aren’t as great a match as they originally thought…
Earlier this week, our editors were discussing writing the rundown of the Venice Film Festival and then we realized we only liked one dress… this one! Salma Hayek looks absolutely stunning in this ruffled gray Gucci gown at the (what else?) Gucci Award For Women in Cinema event. Salma also proves that matching your eyeshadow to your outfit can actually look quite fabulous. Gucci featured a description of Hayek’s gown and clutch on their website. Fun Fact: Venice holds a special place in Hayek’s heart – her husband, Francois-Henri Pinault, and she were married there two years ago on Valentine’s Day! (It also holds a special place in our editors’ hearts too: one celebrated her 23rd birthday there on Valentine’s Day – actually the same day Salma was there getting married!; and the other spent part of her honeymoon last year!) <3
In celebration of Bastille Day, we had to pick our all-time favorite French girl, Marion Cotillard for July 14th! Here, the brunette beauty was wearing a lovely light grey belted suit by Christian Dior to announce the Bike in Style Challenge winners in New York. Her funky shoes were designed by the controversial John Galliano for Dior (the label who Cotillard is the face of). The strappy silver stilettos have little fertility goddess figurines for heels… which must have worked, because the French star recently welcomed her first child with long-time lover Guillaume Canet! Always elegant, even when she has an edge – Viva la France!
This family isn’t just a “Tuesday Twosome” – it’s a “Tuesday Threesome!” Rockers Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale clean up nicely at their first born, Kingston James McGregor’s baptism in 2007. Gwen still maintained her signature style in fishnet stockings, white shades, platform heels, red lipstick and bleached blonde locks, but looked demure in an asymmetrical gunmetal skirted suit and cross. Gavin looks handsome in his beige and white Sunday suit, while Kingston is precious in his white christening outfit. We guess the family that prays together, stays together!
There are plenty of great movies with fantastic fathers – To Kill a Mockingbird, The Pursuit of Happyness, Sleepless in Seattle, Life is Beautiful, My Father the Hero, Parenthood and Taken – to name a few. But it was hard coming up with a well-dressed papa! This dapper dad and daughter duo are Anthony Hopkins and Claire Forlani from the 1998 film Meet Joe Black. This movie was panned, but it’s actually very well-acted and quite touching. Hopkins plays William Parrish, a successful man at the end of his life and meets Death (Brad Pitt), who decides to give him a couple of days before he takes him away. Hopkins has two daughters, Susan and Allison (Claire Forlani and Marcia Gay Harden), and dispenses wisdom, advice and life lessons in the last three days of his life to his girls. Here, William and Susan dance (for the last time) in a classic black and white tuxedo with black studs and a body-hugging gray gown.
