The Little Black List: Best of 2013

Since 2014 is upon us, it’s time for theSkinnyStiletto‘s “Best of 2013” list, where we name our ten favorite looks of the past year.  2013 included two lovely pregnant ladies, lots of white, and even Taylor Swift (she can’t take a joke, but she can certainly wear a dress.)

blake-lively-15blake-lively-16Blake Lively played the most low-maintenance girl of the “Gossip girls,” so her style was more laid-back than her fellow classmates.  Here she is as Serena van der Woodsen on the first episode of the series, returning to her prep school in Manhattan after mysteriously disappearing the year before.  She’s wearing her uniform of a blue and green plaid skirt, a matching loose tie, an untucked white button-down shirt, a black cardigan and tights, with red knee socks and black leather boots.  While eating her yogurt on the steps of the Met, she gets dissed by her former bestie, Blair Waldorf, who doesn’t invite her to the ball she’s throwing, as she’s threatened that Serena will resume her role as the school’s queen bee, and she will be dethroned!

leighton-meester-13-blake-lively-13Okay, we promise this whole week won’t be a love letter to Gossip Girl, but there is no better-dressed pair of private school students than Blair Waldorf & Serena van der Woodsen.  For “Back-to-School Week,” we’re counting down the best private school uniforms, and these two never disappoint.  There’s a bevy of different ways these girls wore their Constance Billard clothes throughout the teen hit, but this look best illustrates the girls’ different styles.  Blair (Leighton Meester) is always dressed like a lady – she loves the classics and never has a hair out of place, while Serena (Blake Lively) is more of a free spirit and casually sexy.  We actually forgot, but we featured this look before in April 2011, making this the 1st time we’ve repeated a Look-of-the-Day!  Blair is sporting her usual everyday look – a crisp, white button-down blouse, navy skirt and matching girly tie, but is also wearing a belted light blue princess coat, delicate black leather gloves and a silk head scarf.  She looks right out of 1950s high society.  Serena, on the other hand, is wearing a more up-to-date look of a cream cable-knit sweater, a camel-colored Roberto Cavalli leather jacket, suede boots, and a plaid skirt with a matching tie.  The loose hair, and not-perfectly-tied tie are indications that Miss van der Woodsen is always a little more laid back than her best friend (and very similar to Blake Lively’s real-life style!)blake-lively-14

leighton-meester-10It’s “Back-to-School Week” here at theSkinnyStiletto!  Summer unfortunately is coming to an end, but that means fashion’s favorite season is here – fall!  Cozy sweaters, plaid skirts, soft scarves, high boots, warm coats and leaves changing!  leighton-meester-11Our editors are no longer in school, and it’s strange to say, but we miss back-to-school shopping and the prospect of starting anew each year.  (We think the Jewish have the right idea celebrating their new year during September!)  This week, we’re featuring our favorite private school looks from film, and today’s “Look-of-the-Day” is none other than Blair Waldorf of Gossip Girl.  Leighton Meester embodied the character of Blair so well, it’s as if her literary self jumped off the page and into this Balenciaga blazer onscreen.  In Season 1 of show, she donned this adorable look on the episode Victor, Victola.  She combined the yellow and blue piped gray boyfriend blazer (complete with a crest on the pocket), a capped-sleeve pinstriped blouse with lace detailing on the bust, white patterned tights, a navy skirt and tie, and topped it off with a red bowed headband.  Blair looks impeccable as she talks to her bestie, Serena (Blake Lively), who also looks cute in her gray argyle sweater.  Autumn looks great on these two BFFs!Blair listens to Serena talk about Dan.

2013 Met Gala Rundown

The Metropolitan Museum’s Annual Costume Gala is one of our favorite red carpet events here at theSkinnyStiletto.  It’s one of fashion’s biggest nights of the year, and the gowns are usually quite dramatic.  We were SO excited for this year’s theme: “Punk: From Chaos to Couture,” but ended up so disappointed in how few of the attendees actually participated in the theme!  We expected high-street mixed with the classic elements of punk: plaid, leather, studs, fishnets, Mohawks, safety pins, and lots of jagged tulle.  (Then again, the whole basis of “punk” subculture was meant to be low-end or discarded, so the fact that it has bled into couture is kind of bullshit.)  Our best dressed choices were the following: Julianne Hough (pictured, top right) wore a strapless, gray and black spiderweb tulle TopShop dress, spiked Giuseppe Zanotti heels, and had her blond locks up in lots of black bobby pins.  Edgy and adorable.  Tommy Hilfiger and wife Dee (pictured, top left), were definitely the best-dressed couple in red and black tartan.  Dee completed her look with leather evening gloves, studded mismatched belts, a faux mullet, and spiked heels.  They looked like they walked straight out of London’s Camden Town (where this editor purchased her own favorite punk-inspired plaid and tulle dress – bought right off the street during grad school).  Christina Ricci, who’s always been kind of dark, with Gothic turns in The Addams Family, Sleepy Hollow, and even Casper, rocked the theme, of course, in a Vivienne Westwood plaid gown, platform heels and a fishnet stockings, but added couture with Old Hollywood hair and Harry Winston diamonds.  We saw a lot of criticism of Diane Kruger’s lace Chanel column gown, but we liked the sheer dress, dark eyeliner, and her pink hair!  Two of our favorite girls – Jennifer Lawrence and Sarah Jessica Parker (pictured, below), wore two awesome headpieces: Parker matched her print Giles Deacon ballgown with a “Punk Couture” Mohawk hat by Philip Treacy, while Lawrence wore a birdcage veil by Jennifer Behr that added to her retro look by Christian Dior.  Although we don’t love Miley Cyrus’s haircut, she definitely went all the way with the theme!  Same for Nicole Richie, and Anne Hathaway, who went much lighter and funkier with their locks.  Mad Men‘s January Jones and Jessica Pare, along with Ginnifer Goodwin, wore the best makeup, by not being afraid to shun their gorgeous looks for going all the way with punk eyeliner and shadow!  I don’t know how “punk rock” Blake Lively’s gown was (pictured, bottom right), but she stunned, nevertheless in a Gucci Premiere dress of feathers and organza that could have been straight out of Black Swan.  Taylor Swift had another stunning J. Mendel gown on (pictured, bottom left), and shockingly, a little pink in her frizzy hairdo.  Definitely a fan of her updated red carpet looks lately.  And finally, the worst-dressed of the night?  Honestly, anyone who didn’t at least try to honor the Gala’s theme.  Our editors expected so much more from edgy girls, like Marion Cotillard, Chloe Sevigny, and Emily Blunt, who were all kind of blah.  Kate Beckinsale, Zooey Deschanel, Heidi Klum, Emmy Rossum, and Dylan Lauren all wore attractive dresses, but were just so mainstream.  But the worst-dressed?  Possibly Kim Kardashian covered in… what was that – floral drapes?  But Gwyneth Paltrow was the worst of the worst, due to her horrible attitude.  She showed up in a hot pink Valentino gown, with simple hair/makeup, and was quoted as saying, “I think we’re all a bit old to dress up punk,” and that the evening, “sucked.”  Real classy Goop.  Until next year…

It’s hard to believe Blake Lively is only 24 in this picture, because she constantly exudes elegance (even if she is always getting cast as the trashy girl these days…)  Here she is going to the Late Show with David Letterman this past summer.  Blake is sporting a Jenny Packham key-hole wrap dress with crystal detailing, accompanied with sparkling Christian Louboutin pumps and a loose, modern beehive.  Simply stunning, as always.  Too bad her wedding photos weren’t released to the public… we’d LOVE to see that gown!

The Little Black List: Best of 2011

We here at theSkinnyStiletto realized we really like compiling lists, so we’ve created a new category we’re calling “The Little Black List.”  To start off 2012, we’re saying good-bye to 2011 by listing the 10 Best Fashion Moments of the past year.  (And no, there will never be a Kardashian on this list…)

1. Kate Middleton Makes Bridal History

2. Reese Witherspoon is Black & White All Over3. Angelina Jolie Causes Envy at Golden Globes4. Philip Treacy Brings Hats Back5. The Princess & the Purple 6. Salma Hayek Shows Off Shades of Gray

7. Blake Lively is Lovely at the Met8. Mila Kunis is Red Hot9. The Obamas: 1st Family of Fashion10. Camilla Belle Bares All

In honor of Gossip Girl‘s 5th season premiere last night, we’re featuring stars Leighton Meester and Blake Lively, who are no strangers to “Tuesday Twosome.”  As privileged, young Manhattanites, Blair Waldorf and Serena van der Woodsen are privy to the best schools, colleges, restaurants, entertainment and, of course, clothes!  Here they are in Episode 4 of the 1st season.  In the series, Blair’s mother, Eleanor, runs her own fashion line and chooses her daughter to model some of her looks when it gets picked up by Henri Bendel, while Serena comes to the photoshoot for support.  But… like every other thing in Blair’s life, Serena ends up getting the gig instead, due to her outgoing and fun personality.  Of course, drama ensues.  Eleanor’s fictional fashion line is actually the work of Abigail Lorick.  Above, some of her looks are perfectly cast – the prim and proper Blair wears a formfitting black and yellow belted dress with matching accessories and sweptback hair, while fun-loving Serena sports a loose-fitting gray, white and black frock with her sunny locks blowing in the breeze!

Continuing our “Pink Wednesday” trend (a la Mean Girls), here’s a different type of girla Gossip Girl!  TV’s Blake Lively looked a real-life Barbie doll at 2009 CFDA Fashion Awards at New York’s Lincoln Center.  This hot pink strapless Michael Kors dress makes the blonde bombshell look like the ultimate California girl (even if she’s made a name for herself playing the complete opposite!)
