Look-of-the-Day

carey-mulligan-7Carey Mulligan plays Jenny Mellor in the 2009 drama, An Education, about a schoolgirl who grows up too fast in a London suburb during the 1960s.  Here, Jenny wears her school uniform in a couple of different scenes throughout the movie, sporting a gray A-line skirt, a cranberry-colored belt, a white-carey-mulligan-8button down blouse, a matching diagonally striped tie, with both a gray pullover, and a crested school coat with a coordinated scarf.  The color combo of gray and burgundy is always one of our favorite classic pairings for fall.  Jenny dons some other adorable vintage looks in the film, like floral, gold, leopard, and even a watercolor frock that we just adore.  But Mulligan apparently didn’t love her outfits as much as we did… She told Today, “I had to work my way into liking the costumesI was less keen on the school uniforms.”  Kate Scheyer, of Vanity Fair, pointed out that the film’s designer, Odile Dicks-Mireaux, created an arc of costumes to tell Jenny’s story of a teen that matures quickly by hanging out with an older crowd, beginning with the rain-soaked schoolgirl (pictured, bottom right) carey-mulligan-9that her suitor meets on the street… Basically a classic pedophile pickup, but it’s also a true storycarey-mulligan-10!

Look-of-the-Day

Oscar week continues, as we talk about some of our favorite looks from various Academy Award nominated flicks!  Costume designer Odile Dicks-Mireaux was actually not nominated for her beautiful work on An Education, but she certainly should have been!  This is the fourth outfit from the 2009 film we’ve featured, which looks just stunning on the adorable Carey Mulligan.  This floral frock nips at the waist and has what seems like a faded blue and gold hydrangea pattern.  With black sunglasses and Audrey Hepburn bangs, she’s the epitome of a early 60s sophisticate.  A perfect look for the warm weather we’ve been having here in New York!

Look-of-the-Day

At this point, we should have written a single article on all the fantastic looks of Carey Mulligan as a teenager who grows up too fast in An Education.  This is the third look we’ve featured from the film, and we still have a couple more we’d like to feature!  In the 2009 movie, Mulligan’s character, Jenny, is seduced by the glamor and sophistication of an older group of socialites.  Here, she is pictured with her female “mentor,” Helen, who teaches her how to dress and put on makeup, so she can look like a mature woman.  Helen is played by British actress Rosamund Pike.  (Fun Fact: Pike played Mulligan’s older sister in 2005’s Pride & Prejudice with Keira Knightley.  It was Mulligan’s first movie role!)  Here, Jenny is sporting one of Helen’s little black dresses with a soft white coat, black and white driving gloves and a small leopard hat.  Helen is quite a match in a leopard coat, cream-colored shift with matching gloves and a white fur hat.  The two make quite a cute pair, but Jenny will soon realize that her new social group is neither glamorous, nor are they true friends…

Look-of-the-Day

In honor of the first day of Spring, theSkinnyStiletto has chosen another look from Carey Mulligan in An Education.  The British teen gets seduced by a seemingly charming and wealthy older man named Peter, and Mulligan has to dress the part to fit in.  She goes from schoolgirl to sophisticate in this British drama.  On her weekend in Paris, she dons this soft periwinkle number.  We here at theSkinnyStiletto aren’t huge fans of floral prints (more on that later), but Mulligan’s fitted watercolor dress is a perfect example of how floral should be worn (even though the movie is set 50 years ago).  According to Vanity Fair, this was Carey Mulligan’s favorite outfit she had to wear.  The film’s costume designer, Odile Dicks-Mireaux, told the magazine the look was reminiscent of Brigitte Bardot, “probably even a little dated (for 1961), but it’s how we thought Peter would want her to be.”  The cool color palette of this shift is a perfect look for the first day of the new season, and our choice for March 21st.

Look-of-the-Day

Carey Mulligan plays a schoolgirl who learns a hard lesson about growing up in the 2009 Oscar-nominated film An Education… and she certainly looks adult in this cream and gold rose-patterned shift.  Complemented with Audrey Hepburn bangs, a glittering clutch and a soft cardigan, Carey looks quite chic for a high school student.  She may have discovered the pitfalls of dating charmers at too young an age, but at least she learned how to dress from her beau’s social-climbing friends.  (Just kidding – we’d rather have our innocence at sixteen.)
