2014 Oscar Rundown

With the Oscars trailing not far behind the Winter Olympics, it seems that the ladies of the evening donned shades of our nation’s beloved red, white, and blue!  Hollywood’s “It” Girl Jennifer Lawrence (pictured, top right) sported her favorite hue in Dior Haute Couture.  Three of our favorites chose to wear different hues of blue.  Sandra Bullock (pictured, top right) seemed to be everyone’s top choice of the evening in her stunning sapphire Alexander McQueen gown.  With her sweetheart neckline, draped waist, and side swept curls, Bullock rocked old Hollywood glam with a touch of modern (notice the blue nails) and positively glowed in her custom Lorraine Schwartz jewels.  Ever the classy lady, Lupita Nyong’o (pictured, below) was show-stopping in her pale blue Prada gown, that deserved an award all its own.  Nyong’o has been hitting the red carpet in anything but pastels this awards season, but Sunday night she was a modern-day princess.  lupita-nyong'o-3The double-plunging neckline on the front and back was beautifully balanced with that full, gathered skirt.  From her head to her hands, she was adorned in multiple yellow gold and diamond Fred Leighton pieces ranging all the way back to the 1800s.  Amy Adams (pictured, below left) kept it all about the dress when she chose that deliciously dark royal blue Gucci Premiere number.  Adams swept her beautiful curls up into an interesting take on the French twist and pulled it off seamlessly.  She chose to keep the jewelry as delicate as her sheath with color coordinated Tiffany & Co. earrings and minimalist rings.  Kate Hudson (pictured, below right) looked fabulous in glamorous white, a matured and improved version of her other stunning look by Atelier Versace in 2003.  Other popular looks of the evening were nude or pale pink gowns with either metallic accents or an asymmetrical design.  Both Jessica Biel and Penelope Amy-Adams-9Cruz failed to pull off these trends.  With Biel’s enviable body, her dress choice should have been more detail-oriented.  Her Chanel Haute Couture nude and metallic number ended up looking cheap and like a last-minute decision, which is very hard to do in Chanel.  Cruz chose to wear a pastel petal pink Giambattista Valli dress which looked more like she was chaperoning a prom in the suburbs, rather than attending the Oscars.  Being a one shouldered frock, adorning a tiny black bow around the waist, and excess material at the other arm, this dress looked unfinished and like it didn’t know what it wanted to be.  But our final favorite was stunning couple Matthew McConaughey and wife Camila Alves (pictured, bottom).  America’s favorite Texan wore a winter white Dolce & Gabbana tuxedo, while his lovely wife, Camila, wore a pale pink Gabriela Cadena half-caped gown, which was the best one-shouldered look we’ve ever seen!  And just like the Olympics, McConaughey took home gold!matthew-mcconaughey-5-camila-alves-1

kate-middleton-45We think it’s safe to assume Kate Middleton had a pretty good year.  She gave birth to her first child, the beautiful baby George, who also happens to be a direct royal heir to the British crown.  And she was back to her beautiful shape in mere weeks.  Today is her 32nd birthday, so to celebrate the pretty princess, we’re featuring the lovely outfit she wore to Prince George’s christening this past year.  Middleton sported a cream-colored, ruffled two-piece suit by her favorite designer, Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen (who outfitted her during another historic moment you may remember in 2011…)  Kate’s sister, Pippa, and her mother-in-law, Camilla, also donned ivory to match the baby’s baptism gown.  Kate’s accessories revealed she’s loyal to other labels, too: her shoes were her trusty L.K. Bennett nude Sledge pumps, and her pale silk fascinator is by another favorite of the Duchess, Jane Taylor, who revealed the gorgeous hat is available for sale (for a whopping £755!)  The beret’s name?  “Georgie,” of course.  Happy Birthday Kate!kate-middleton-46

gwen-stefani-10And it’s such a miracle that you and me are still good friends; After all that we’ve been through; I know we’re cool…”  This “Pink Wednesday” is the only pink outfit Gwen Stefani wears in her 2005 music video “Cool.”  While No Doubt’s leading lady is a beautiful brunette in her flashback scenes, here she’s a blonde bombshell reminiscing about her old boyfriend, while hanging out in her massive villa in Lake Como.  She sports a leopard v-neck sweater, a high ponytail, a wide black belt and, what else, a faded salmon pink pencil skirt from Alexander McQueen’s Fall 2005 Ready to Wear Collection.  The song “Cool” is about Stefani’s previous relationship with fellow band-member, Tony Kanal, and his real-life girlfriend, Erin Lokitz, plays Gwen’s former lover’s new girlfriend in the video (pictured, below).  Talk about art imitating life!  But, we’re glad they’re still “cool.”  <3gwen-stefani-11

On our list of featured Oscar-nominated actresses this year is Miss Anne Hathaway at the New York Premiere of her 2012 film, One Day.  She sported a strapless black and gold Alexander McQueen Resort cocktail dress with matching gold stiletto pumps and jewelry by Tiffany & Co.  She’s nominated, and the frontrunner, for her supporting performance in Les Miserables, so it makes to show her wearing gold. 😉

Wednesday’s Shoe

I’ve never worn high heels and can’t get used to essentially wobbling around on the balls of my feet.  But Effie runs around in them full-time, and I’m determined that if she can do it, so can I.”  Throughout The Hunger Games, Effie Trinket is always running around, making plans and sticking to schedules in her various pairs of high heels.  Costume designer Judianna Makovsky picked out some great selections for Effie’s onscreen presence, including these futuristic “Gold Faithful” peep-toe stiletto booties by Alexander McQueen, who served as one of Makovsky’s fashion inspirations for the film.  Originally priced around $1,200 (yikes – no wonder they’re meant for the opulent and indulgent people of the Capitol), they are now available on several online outlets for a lower price.

This probably should have been a “Look-of-the-Day” pick a couple of weeks ago when Princess Catherine first wore it, but we waited till now!  Kate Middleton, looking glamorous as always wore this belted lavender Alexander McQueen gown when visiting Los Angeles in July.  (This editor was supposed to attend the Alexander McQueen Exhibit at the Met with one of her best buddies today, but work got in the way… Boo!)  Her platform silver strappy heels were by Jimmy Choo and her earrings were lent to her by Queen Elizabeth.  William and Kate were attending the BAFTA Brits to Watch event in LA after their visit to Canada (where Kate also looked fab).  The couple fit in perfectly among the Hollywood hotties who were trying to schmooze with the royal pair – although Kate outshined all of them!

Special Exhibit: The Princess Bride

Haven’t had enough of the royal wedding, yet?  Kate Middleton’s famous Alexander McQueen bridal gown by Sarah Burton will go on display for visitors to see this coming summer!  Buckingham Palace will offer tours from July 23rd to October 3rd of this year to view Princess Catherine’s dress, Cartier tiara, veil, heels, as well as the Rolls-Royce Phantom and 1902 State Landau coach that carried Kate and Wills.  (Fun Fact: Even the wedding cake by Fiona Cairns will be shown in the State dining room!)  Seeing the royal jewels is always a fun choice while visiting London, and being able to see this exhibit seems like a great addition!  Tickets are $28.70 for adults and $16.50 for children.  Wish we were there!

Not the NY Mets of Queens, These are the Queens of the NY Met!

The Metropolitan Museum Costume Gala has a reputation for attracting some wild looks (well, it’s a costume ball after-all!), but this year had some downright sleek and stunning looks.  Actresses, fashion mavens, singers and celebs attended this year’s event to honor late designer Alexander McQueen.  Our hands-down favorite goes to Gossip Girl star Blake Lively in her gorgeous with a soft gray pailette-embroidered Chanel Haute Couture gown (or sari of sorts).  Lively accessorized her looks with Lorraine Schwartz jewelry and cream Christian Louboutin strappy heels.  The famous blonde had recently dyed her hair light red, but she looked just beautiful in this fantastic frock.  The gowns pictured above were also some of our favorites, even though they were pretty tame for the Met Gala.  German actress Diane Kruger (pictured, top left) who is known for her daring fashion choices, wore  this black-skirted Jason Wu gown with a silver embellished top that took 500 hours of hand embroidery, according to People.  Kruger also carried a Jimmy Choo bag and donned Van Cleef & Arpels jewelry.  The hottest mom on television, Sofia Vergara (pictured, top middle) of Modern Family, showed off her curves in a black, white and green Carolina Herrera gown with Japanese flowers decorating the front.  Model (and Mrs. Andy Roddick, pictured, top right) Brooklyn Decker wore a hot pink Michael Kors long-sleeved gown and mirrored platform sandals from the same line.  Maybe a little simple (or too damn bright) for the sophisticated New York gathering (it looks a little like Malibu Barbie’s big night out), but she’s young enough (only 24 – dear lord!) to pull it off.   The better-dressed half of the Olsen twins, Ashley (pictured, bottom left), wore an off-the-shoulder vintage black Dior Couture gown with cream puffy-sleeves and metallic Christian Louboutin pumps.  Olsen got criticized for the look, but we think that must have been one of the few glamorous dresses that survived the horrid 1980s.  Freida  Pinto (pictured, bottom middle) also got flack for her “black tie” look.  The Indian actress donned a white silk Chanel Haute Couture gown with a masculine Chopard watch and Chanel clutch.  But she looked beautiful as always, and as former cater waiters/bartenders, our editors had a soft spot for this shout-out to the staff!  And the most famous niece in Hollywood, Emma Roberts (pictured, bottom right) had on a white silk, cut-out Michael Kors column gown and Chopard diamond drop earrings on.  She’s looking quite grown-up these days!  Who was the worst-dressed?  Mary-Kate Olsen and Kirsten Dunst finally killed “hippie chic” with  their hideous looks.  Fergie and Naomi Campbell looked like they were covered in toilet paper.  But our biggest criticism of the event?  Again with the NUDE!!  Blech!  Salma Hayek, Gwyneth Paltrow, Sarah Jessica Parker, Maggie Q, Kate Hudson, Taylor Swift, Naomi Watts, Jessica Alba, Ashley Greene, Renee Zellweger, and even teenager Dakota Fanning – young stars, old stars, new stars – and many well-dressed celebs all in beige!  The color is not flattering on anyone, so we don’t know why this trend has taken hold.  Hell, even some of the dresses we liked had nude and cream-colored accents, but to look like a human body-stocking on the red carpet is just strange.  Then again, every dress we liked other than Brooklyn Decker’s seemed to be black and white… guess we’re not diverse, either!  People, it’s a costume gala – try to be a little more adventurous next year!

Playing second fiddle to a blushing bride isn’t always a fun job (especially when you’re in the world’s most watched wedding – don’t trip!  Only 1/3 of the planet is watching!)  But Princess Kate’s kid sister seemed to be having a grand ol’ time at her big sister’s royal nuptials!  Pippa Middleton seems as perky and fun as her nickname!  Princess Catherine wasn’t about to make her maid-of-honor look like a dog – she outfitted Pippa in a sexy gown by the same designer (Alexander McQueen by Sarah Burton) as herself.  What a good sister!  People were perplexed why Pippa was in white too, but it’s royal tradition to dress a lady-in-waiting in a similar color to the bride.  Both girls looked quite glamorous, which is why we waited a week to feature Pippa in her own post!  And really?  Which wedding guest had a gown appropriate enough for “Fancy Friday” that wasn’t Kate?
