Before there were Mean Girls or Gossip Girls, there was a different Queen Bee of teen drama – Kathryn Merteuil. Played by Sarah Michelle Gellar, this manipulating Manhattanite was a dangerous, albeit glamorous, teenager in Cruel Intentions, the 1999 remake of famed French novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses (Dangerous Liaisons). As a young girl, Buffy was this editor’s favorite TV show; and Kathryn’s clothing was my style inspiration. (Basically Sarah Michelle dominated a good portion of my teen years). Miss Merteuil’s fantastic fashion still remains one of my favorite film wardrobes of all time. Here, Gellar looks like a lovely, modern-day Audrey Hepburn (black sunhat, big black sunglasses with a chic dress) sitting in Central Park – except she’s anything but sweet. Costume designer Denise Wingate actually put a lot of thought into her clothing choices for the 1999 drama, which is well-documented in the bonus features of the DVD. Sitting with Gellar is an innocent Selma Blair as Cecile Caldwell, a naive rich kid Kathryn and her stepbrother Sebastian take advantage of in every way possible to get what they want. Her extremely preppy coral polo and matching plaid skirt with a soft green sweater draped over her shoulders show how young she really is – and completely unaware of the erotic experience she’s about to have during her simple picnic.
